Dry Application vs. Wet Application – Full Comparison

 Definitions

1. Dry Application

• Principle: Apply the film directly onto a dry, clean car body. The adhesive backing of the film features built-in air release channels, and air is expelled directly with a squeegee without the need for water lubrication.

• Adhesive Layer: Pressure-sensitive adhesive with high initial tack and integrated air release channels.

2. Wet Application

• Principle: Spray installation fluid/foam water onto the car body to reduce the initial tack of the adhesive layer, providing room for sliding and adjustment. After positioning, drain all water completely and dry the film for the adhesive layer to regain its strong tack.

• Adhesive Layer: Pressure-sensitive adhesive with low initial tack and no air release channels (positioning is achieved through water lubrication).

Advantages and Disadvantages Comparison

1. Dry Application

Advantages

• Ultra-fast construction: No waiting for water to dry, shortening the construction period by about 30%. The car can be driven away on the same day after application.

• Excellent conformity on curved surfaces: Combined with air release channels and a heat gun, the film adheres more closely to complex parts such as bumpers and side mirrors.

• No water mark risk: Completely avoids water stains and hard water spots, ideal for areas with hard water quality.

• Instant adhesion: Edge trimming and inspection can be done right after application, with no need for waiting for secondary rework.

• More stable in the later stage: The adhesive layer is not diluted by water at all, delivering the strongest adhesion. Edges are less prone to lifting and delamination, with almost no water marks or hazy issues. The probability of blistering and wrinkling in the later stage is the lowest.

Disadvantages

• Extremely low fault tolerance: Repeated peeling of the film may damage the adhesive, car paint and film color.

• High requirements for technicians: Novices are likely to cause wrinkles and air bubbles; only skilled technicians can perform the operation.

• Prone to adhesive marks: Violent construction may lead to dark marks, orange peel and adhesive marks. Uneven squeegee pressure or repeated peeling will easily leave adhesive marks on high-gloss surfaces.

Applicable Scenarios

Complex curved surfaces/edges and corners (bumpers, wheel arches, side mirrors); projects pursuing construction efficiency; construction by skilled technicians in professional stores.

2. Wet Application

Advantages

• High fault tolerance: Foam water lubrication allows the film to slide and adjust, making it beginner-friendly and reducing rework.

• Flatter finish on large surfaces: Fewer air bubbles and wrinkles on flat areas such as hoods and car doors, delivering a mirror-like effect.

• Better suited for high temperatures: In summer or high-temperature workshops, water reduces the initial tack, preventing the film from sticking prematurely.

• Less dust: Water reduces electrostatic adsorption, ensuring a cleaner construction process.

Disadvantages

• Long construction period: The film needs to stand for 24–48 hours to dry completely, and the car cannot be exposed to rain or driven at high speed during this period.

• Prone to edge lifting: Un-dried water or excessive soapy liquid will cause edges and corners to lift and fail to adhere firmly. Edges and corners are also more likely to lift after exposure to direct sunlight and high-speed driving.

• Water mark risk: Poor water quality or incomplete water scraping may leave spots after drying, resulting in water marks and a hazy surface.

• Reduced adhesion: Prolonged contact between the adhesive and water will lower the overall adhesion of the film.

Applicable Scenarios

Large flat surfaces (hoods, roof, large flat areas of car doors) for a flatter finish; DIY projects by beginners; projects pursuing zero errors and high flatness; projects pursuing an extremely flat finish with no time constraints.

Key Construction Precautions

1. Dry Application

• The car body must be absolutely dry and clean; wipe it with alcohol/isopropanol and let the solution evaporate completely.

• Construct quickly after peeling the film backing to avoid prolonged exposure and dust adhesion of the adhesive layer.

• Apply even pressure with the squeegee to prevent adhesive marks caused by repeated peeling and pasting.

• Do not overstretch the film when applying it to edge areas, as this may cause retraction.

2. Wet Application

• Prepare the installation fluid with a precise ratio (usually neutral soapy water/special installation fluid); tap water containing detergents is not allowed.

• Drain all water completely after positioning, blow dry the edges and corners thoroughly, and seal the edges in a dry state (residual water will cause delamination and edge lifting in the later stage).

• Limit the contact time between the adhesive layer and water to 15-20 minutes to avoid permanent loss of tack.

A:Yes. All vehicles must be free of dust, dirt, wax, oil and other contaminants that may prevent the vinyl from adhering directly to the vehicle's paint surface during installation.

Q:Do I need a heat gun
A:It is recommended to use a heat gun for the fastest and best results.

Q:How to remove vinyl wrap
A:During the removal process it is important to heat the vinyl using a heat gun to a temperature of up to 50°C. Pay special attention to painted plastic parts and repainted areas of the car body. It is the customer's responsibility to determine the suitability of self-adhesive vinyl to the surface to which it will be applied.
The time it takes to remove vinyl is affected by many factors, such as the time since application, whether the trim is exposed to the outdoors or indoors, the type of surface, the temperature of the room and surface, etc.

Q:How to maintain the car wrap film
A:The best maintenance method is regular cleaning. When there is dirt, bird droppings (especially on horizontal surfaces), or fuel spillage after rain, the membrane surface should be rinsed quickly or wiped with detergent immediately. When washing your car, we recommend using a high-pressure washer (less than 2000 ps) or hand washing. Before using a foaming cleanser, make sure to rinse away as much dirt and grit as possible with water. Do not wash your vehicle in an automatic car wash at a gas station to clean your vehicle.

Q:Can polish or wax be used on the car wrap film
A:It is ok, high-quality polishing, use a dual-action polisher at low speed and do not use any abrasive polishes or abrasive compounds on the film. It is recommended to use a high quality spray wax after washing your car to maintain or even extend performance life. Please test the polish or wax on a small area of the film before applying to the entire vehicle. Please keep in mind that we do not offer a warranty if the film is damaged by any aftermarket products (i.e. waxes, polishes, ceramic coatings.

Q:Does it matter whether the vehicle is stored indoors or outdoors
A:It is recommended to store it in a garage or a cool place (if there is no garage) on a daily basis. The longer it is exposed to sunlight and outdoor conditions, the service life of the color-changing film will be shortened. At night, if possible, the vehicle should be protected from weather conditions such as dew or rain. If there is no garage, a cloth car cover can also provide good protection.

Q:When should I use extra adhesion or 3M Primer 94
A:When you are going to wrap a complex curves such as bumper, lips, mirrors, and any curves parts and any parts that receive mass amount of heat, you must use a 3M primer 94 to reduce the risk of peeling. If you do not use this application, there are chances that the vinyl will peel after air and water goes into the vinyl. If you feel like that the vinyl does not stick on your part when you wrap, that's mean it is the time that you must use this application to help you.

Q:What should you pay attention to after installing vinyl wrap film
A:After the construction of vinyl wrap film is completed, the glue has not completely adhered to the paint surface. It is recommended not to wash the car within 3 days (you can use a wet fiber rag to clean), and try not to drive on the highway (or drive at a speed below 80km/h).
If the following situation occurs, please clean or handle the vehicle in time, otherwise the vehicle film will be damaged:
1. Insect corpses, bird droppings, gums, and obvious rainwater scales adhere to the film surface and are exposed to high temperatures.
2. The film surface is attached to the air-conditioning water after splashing on the floor, and is exposed to high temperatures;
3. The flying paint from spray paint adheres to the film surface and is exposed to high temperatures;
4. A large amount of oil stains discharged from the range hood adhere to the membrane surface and are exposed to high temperatures;
5. After running on the highway and a large number of insect corpses are attached to the surface of the car film; when cleaning the car immediately, wait until the vehicle temperature is at room temperature. Do not spray chemical agents such as insect corpse remover on the surface of the film when the film is at high temperature. Otherwise, the membrane surface will be damaged immediately.
6. For vehicles that have been installed with vinyl wrap film, try to avoid sticking the suction cup directly on the film surface, otherwise it will leave suction marks. Wedding car ribbons, firecrackers, fireworks, dyes, etc. can easily cause staining on the membrane surface. If stained, clean it up in time to prevent the membrane surface from penetrating and staining.

Q:What is PET liner vinyl wrap
A:PET Liner vinyl wrap backing is made of plastic PET, and the surface of the film is flat and smooth, whether it is matte or glossy. It is not easy to produce orange peel lines, but it requires the installer to have high installation skill and relevant experience.

Q:Precautions before installing PET Liner Vinyl Wrap
A:After cutting the material, it is recommended to remove the PET protective film immediately. If the PET protective film continues to remain on the rest roll, the "TUNNEL PROBLEM" effect will occur because the tension between the PVC film substrate and the PET protective film and the PET release bottom is unbalanced; Due to the large tension of PET film caused by arching, this will damage the PVC material and destroy the adhesive backing, resulting in the waste and loss of the film; Therefore, it is recommended that after unpacking and pasting, the remaining material needs to peel off the PET protective film, or pay attention to tying the remaining material when slitting, so as to reduce unnecessary loss, if the protective film is not removed after opening, the back will arch up and deform with stripe marks
