Dry Application vs. Wet Application – Full Comparison
Definitions
1. Dry Application
• Principle: Apply the film directly onto a dry, clean car body. The adhesive backing of the film features built-in air release channels, and air is expelled directly with a squeegee without the need for water lubrication.
• Adhesive Layer: Pressure-sensitive adhesive with high initial tack and integrated air release channels.
2. Wet Application
• Principle: Spray installation fluid/foam water onto the car body to reduce the initial tack of the adhesive layer, providing room for sliding and adjustment. After positioning, drain all water completely and dry the film for the adhesive layer to regain its strong tack.
• Adhesive Layer: Pressure-sensitive adhesive with low initial tack and no air release channels (positioning is achieved through water lubrication).
Advantages and Disadvantages Comparison
1. Dry Application
Advantages
• Ultra-fast construction: No waiting for water to dry, shortening the construction period by about 30%. The car can be driven away on the same day after application.
• Excellent conformity on curved surfaces: Combined with air release channels and a heat gun, the film adheres more closely to complex parts such as bumpers and side mirrors.
• No water mark risk: Completely avoids water stains and hard water spots, ideal for areas with hard water quality.
• Instant adhesion: Edge trimming and inspection can be done right after application, with no need for waiting for secondary rework.
• More stable in the later stage: The adhesive layer is not diluted by water at all, delivering the strongest adhesion. Edges are less prone to lifting and delamination, with almost no water marks or hazy issues. The probability of blistering and wrinkling in the later stage is the lowest.
Disadvantages
• Extremely low fault tolerance: Repeated peeling of the film may damage the adhesive, car paint and film color.
• High requirements for technicians: Novices are likely to cause wrinkles and air bubbles; only skilled technicians can perform the operation.
• Prone to adhesive marks: Violent construction may lead to dark marks, orange peel and adhesive marks. Uneven squeegee pressure or repeated peeling will easily leave adhesive marks on high-gloss surfaces.
Applicable Scenarios
Complex curved surfaces/edges and corners (bumpers, wheel arches, side mirrors); projects pursuing construction efficiency; construction by skilled technicians in professional stores.
2. Wet Application
Advantages
• High fault tolerance: Foam water lubrication allows the film to slide and adjust, making it beginner-friendly and reducing rework.
• Flatter finish on large surfaces: Fewer air bubbles and wrinkles on flat areas such as hoods and car doors, delivering a mirror-like effect.
• Better suited for high temperatures: In summer or high-temperature workshops, water reduces the initial tack, preventing the film from sticking prematurely.
• Less dust: Water reduces electrostatic adsorption, ensuring a cleaner construction process.
Disadvantages
• Long construction period: The film needs to stand for 24–48 hours to dry completely, and the car cannot be exposed to rain or driven at high speed during this period.
• Prone to edge lifting: Un-dried water or excessive soapy liquid will cause edges and corners to lift and fail to adhere firmly. Edges and corners are also more likely to lift after exposure to direct sunlight and high-speed driving.
• Water mark risk: Poor water quality or incomplete water scraping may leave spots after drying, resulting in water marks and a hazy surface.
• Reduced adhesion: Prolonged contact between the adhesive and water will lower the overall adhesion of the film.
Applicable Scenarios
Large flat surfaces (hoods, roof, large flat areas of car doors) for a flatter finish; DIY projects by beginners; projects pursuing zero errors and high flatness; projects pursuing an extremely flat finish with no time constraints.
Key Construction Precautions
1. Dry Application
• The car body must be absolutely dry and clean; wipe it with alcohol/isopropanol and let the solution evaporate completely.
• Construct quickly after peeling the film backing to avoid prolonged exposure and dust adhesion of the adhesive layer.
• Apply even pressure with the squeegee to prevent adhesive marks caused by repeated peeling and pasting.
• Do not overstretch the film when applying it to edge areas, as this may cause retraction.
2. Wet Application
• Prepare the installation fluid with a precise ratio (usually neutral soapy water/special installation fluid); tap water containing detergents is not allowed.
• Drain all water completely after positioning, blow dry the edges and corners thoroughly, and seal the edges in a dry state (residual water will cause delamination and edge lifting in the later stage).
• Limit the contact time between the adhesive layer and water to 15-20 minutes to avoid permanent loss of tack.
